Sunderland offered a surprising £10 million deal to Younes Kaboul, currently playing for Portsmouth. The defender is showing superb performance during the last FA Cup match. The offer by Sunderland is not without challenge, especially because there are other teams that are also interested in getting Kaboul to join them.

Spurs, Kaboul’s former club, would be Sunderland’s biggest challenge. The team must still receive £2 million, owed by Portsmouth after the unfinished transfer deal in 2008. The deal for Kaboul was for £9 million, yet Spurs haven’t received £2 million of the deal.

Aside from the £2 million owed, Spurs also hold a sell-on clause worth £6 million. Although Sunderland’s offer looks a lot more interesting for Portsmouth than the £6 million compensation from Spurs, but the previous transfer agreement clearly stated that Spurs get to make the first decision if Kaboul is out on sale. Spurs’ Harry Redknapp would have to sell one of his player before the team can pay for Kaboul’s back-transfer, while Sunderland can easily offer a straight cash deal.

Sunderland’s boss, Steve Bruce, thought of enhancing the team’s defense line. Kaboul would be the perfect solution for that, adding the needed mix of characters and playing style to make the team’s defense a lot more solid. Sunderland could have a solid defense line indeed, especially because they also signed Matt Killgallon to fill the center back position.

Meanwhile, Sunderland’s transfer target, Salvador Cabanas, is still in critical condition after being shot in the head just a while back.

Arsenal showed a spectacular performance when they defeated Bolton Wanderers and gain Premier League top spot. However, just days after, the team was defeated by Stoke City 1-3 during the FA Cup rendezvous. Arsenal’s performance is far from being steady — in fact, some critiques actually commented that their past few performances are like rollercoaster, going up and down rapidly. It is only natural that we all wonder, what now Arsenal?

The next match will be against Aston Villa. With Coach Martin O’Neil leading the team, Aston Villa is not showing a spectacular performance as well over the past couple of matches. The match will be held at Aston Villa’s Villa Park; Arsenal have never lost a match at Villa Park since 1998, which should be a good motivation for the team.

Arsene Wenger is looking at his 300th wins if Arsenal can win against Aston Villa. Wenger would be the second coach ever to reach that level, after Sir Alex Ferguson. This will make the match against Aston Villa even more important for the French coach.

The team is also in good shape. Players are practicing intensively for the upcoming match, determined to regain their confidence after the last defeat against Stroke City. So what is it going to be? Will Arsenal continue their winning streak at Villa Park with another great win? Or will the team spiral down and suffer another defeat? With Manchester United leading the Premier League with just two points gap, winning this match will be very special.
